Shortwave Radiogram

Hello friends,
Most of Europe shifts to summer time on Sunday. The transmission schedule for Shortwave Radiogram remains at the same UTC times, so the broadcast will be one hour later by local time for most listeners in Europe.

I am not aware of any frequency changes. However, The Mighty KBC transmission to North America Sunday 0000-0200 UTC (Saturday 8-10 pm EDT) will be on new 5960 kHz starting this weekend. The usual minute of MFSK32 will be at about 0130 UTC. IBC will also have some schedule changes (see below).

Shortwave Radiogram, 13-14 January 2018

Hello friends,

Please note that WRMI Florida has replaced 11580 kHz with 7780 kHz to accommodate winter propagation in the northern hemisphere. So listen for Shortwave Radiogram on 7780 Sunday at 2030 and 2330 UTC. See the new schedule below.

Due to automation problems, WRMI last weekend broadcast Shortwave Radiogram Monday at 0800 UTC on 5850 kHz but not the advertised 7730 kHz. Both of those frequencies did not sign on until 0800 UTC, even though they are scheduled to start at 0700 UTC Sundays and Mondays. WRMI has been informed. I hope both 5850 and 7730 kHz carry Shortwave Radiogram this weekend, with the latter frequency more likely to reach Europe.

Last weekend’s Thor Micro was generally successful in weak-signal conditions, although this mode failed when received via a multipath signal. And there were many examples of successful decoding of the Persian text (see below).

This weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram will mostly be in the usual MFSK32, but there will be one item in Thor 22. Thor 22 (I still don’t know if it should be Thor or THOR) has lately been used by digital HF nets in the northeastern USA. At 78 wpm, Thor 22 is somewhat slower than MFSK32 (120 wpm). As you decode the Thor 22, you will see the Shortwave Radiogram avatar in the upper right, and an image at the end of the news item. Unfortunately, Fldigi saves these images as .raw files, which are not as convenient as the .png files of MFSK32 images. You can find freeware to convert the .raw files to .jpg.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 30, 13-14 January 2018, in MFSK32 except where noted:

2:45   Norway strengthens Arctic cooperation with USA*

Shortwave Radiogram

Ultimo Shortwave Radiogram del 2017

Hello friends,

Apologies, especially to North Americans who were awake at an inconvenient hour, for the missing Shortwave Radiogram last Sunday at 0600 UTC on 7730 kHz. The legal difficulties of Brother Stair, a major WRMI client, caused a sudden reduction in the WRMI transmission schedule.

Jeff White at WRMI has kindly offered us Monday at 0800-0830 UTC on 7730 kHz and (for this weekend at least) 5850 kHz. This Monday is a holiday, but when Monday reverts to being a work day, North Americans might want to consider using Audacity’s timer record. Or just leave Fldigi running all night, then read the text and look at the images in the morning.

Please also note that The Mighty KBC is changing frequency this weekend to 6150 kHz for its North America broadcast, UTC Sunday at 0000-0200 UTC. The new frequency replaces 5960 kHz.

Last weekend’s holiday lights special produced some very nice decoded MFSK32 images from all parts of the world. See the examples above and at the bottom of this email. Additional images have been posted to @SWRadiogram, or https://twitter.com/swradiogram . If you missed the broadcast, Scott in Ontario provided this video, suitable for your own decoding.

This weekend we will transmit images of Happy New Year in the fourteen languages of the Shortwave Radiogram listeners who are currently sending reception reports or reporting decodes to @SWRadiogram. Sorry if I missed anyone’s language. There will be four additional MFSK32 images, for a total of 18!

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 28, 30-31 December 2017, all in MFSK32:

1:32   Program preview

2:34   New shortwave broadcast station in Australia*

7:23   Radio Caroline returns to the airwaves*

VOA – RADIOGRAM para este Fin de Semana

VOA RADIOGRAM

VOA RADIOGRAM

Hello friends,

I produced this weekend’s VOA Radiogram yesterday (Thursday), during the administration of Barack Obama. It will be broadcast during the administration of Donald Trump.

The show will include one item about past inaugurations, and the final image will show the National Mall, site of the inauguration, with the VOA headquarters also in the picture.

One science news item this weekend will be in Olivia 64-2000, which may be helpful if reception is poor.

Mid-winter propagation continues to provide challenges and opportunities. Some listeners in northern Europe heard and decoded last weekend’s broadcast Saturday 0930-1000 UTC on 5865 kHz. And the Sunday 1930-2000 UTC broadcast on 15670 kHz, lately difficult to hear in Europe (the nominal target), was received last weekend in New Zealand. (See images below.)

A few operating notes:

For best Olivia 64-2000 performance, turn Fldigi’s squelch (SQL) off.
The RSID at 1500 Hz sometimes mixes with the transmitter hum, most noticeable at 360 Hz, to move your receive audio frequency down to 1140 Hz, resulting in no decode.

To prevent this, in Fldigi: Configure > IDs > RsID > unselect Searches passband. Your center audio frequency will wander no more than +/- 200 Hz.
Fldigi automatically saves your decoded MFSK images as png files in the folder \fldigi.files\images\ (in Windows; folder names might be different with other operating systems). You can attach those png files with your reception report.
The VOA Radiogram Twitter account @VOARadiogram is especially active before, during, and after the broadcasts. You don’t need a Twitter account: just go to https://twitter.com/voaradiogram and refresh it occasionally.

Here is the lineup for VOA Radiogram, program 199, 21-22 January 2017, all in MFSK32 except where noted:

1:46 Program preview

2:58 Presidential inaugurations in history*

8:18 Micronesia hopes Trump reconsiders climate change*

13:01 First freight train from China to UK*

18:24 Olivia 64-2000: Milky Way looting stars from near galaxy

VOA RADIOGRAM

Most listeners in Europe were unable to receive VOA Radiogram last weekend Sunday, 7 December, at 1930 UTC, on 15670 kHz. Mid-winter propagation was the cause. The 15670 kHz transmission was received fairly well in North America. And Chris in New Zealand received 15670 well enough for this MFSK32 image decode …
