Shortwave Radiogram

Shortwave Radiogram

Hello friends,

This weekend’s first broadcast of Shortwave Radiogram is First broadcast is today at 2030 UTC on 7780 and 9455 kHz. Listeners in North America: Tell your bosses you need to go home early to decode the modes.

Response has been light to the Friday 2030 UTC and Monday 0800 UTC shows, most likely because of the inconvenient times and poor reception on Europe. I will try to find a new weekend slot for Shortwave Radiogram. If you have suggestions for convenient times and days, please let me know.

During the weekend, many listeners report results and post decoded images to the Shortwave Radiogram Twitter account, @SWRadiogram. If you are on Twitter, please join in. Include @SWRadiogram in your tweet. If you are not on Twitter, you can see what is posted at https://twitter.com/swradiogram .

During the past week, our Twitter group also posted SSTV images received from the International Space Station. I received only a few blurry images, but Merkouris in Greece decoded the entire set of SSTV images transmitted from the ISS.

During last weekend’s broadcast, I was amazed by how well the fast MFSK128 and MFSK64 modes decoded even in less than ideal conditions. Thanks to listeners who produced videos of their reception and decodes (from which you can decode, though I was unsuccessful with the audio from DFS in Japan):

Day Time Name Location URL
Saturday 1600-1630 UTC DFS Japan https://youtu.be/mvEnHimRylk
Saturday 1600-1630 UTC Ralf Germany https://youtu.be/5l7_TPAEO-g
Sunday 2330-2400 UTC BlackApple 62 Italy https://youtu.be/qw0pxaRyvUc
Sunday 2330-2400 UTC Scott Ontario https://youtu.be/DR4SFTJXCIY

You can also access audio of my reception Monday at 0800-0830 UTC on 7730 kHz using an SDR in Australia. This is interesting not only because of the distance from the Florida transmitter, but also because of the wideband interference which proved to be a slight problem only for the MFSK128 mode — plus the fuzzy images. (For more audio of Shortwave Radiogram, remember that Mark in the UK keeps an audio archive here.)

This weekend on Shortwave Radio, we will again transmit the sequence of MFSK128, 64, and 32, each with an image. We will also experiment with three of the fastest Thor modes: Thor 50×1, Thor 50×2, and Thor 100. All three of these are available on TIVAR and AndFlmsg as well as Fldigi. An RSID will be sent at the beginning of each mode, but if the software does not switch automatically, five seconds will be provided after the RSID for a manual change.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 44, 20-23 April 2018, in modes as noted:

1:33  MFSK32: Program preview
2:53  MFSK128: UK media regulator probes RT’s impartiality*
5:45  MFSK64: Volcanic rock traps CO2 and turns it inert*
11:36  MFSK32: Meteorite’s diamonds might be from lost planet*
19:46  Thor 50×1: Brazilian aquifer may be diminishing
21:35  Thor 50×2: Continued

Hello friends,

For the summer, Shortwave Radiogram remains at the same UTC times. In North America, where daylight time is observed, the broadcasts are one hour ahead by local time, e.g. Sunday 4:30 and 7:30 pm and Monday 4:00 am EDT. (Summer time begins 25 March in Europe.)

Last week’s experiment with MFSK32 images transmitted at half speed, designed by Mark Braunstein WA4KFZ, produced interesting results. There were several examples of the half-speed images, decoded at full speed, providing higher quality images, as predicted. (See, hear, and decode one example.) In some cases, usually when the full speed image was good to begin with, any differences were not detectable.

Shortwave Radiogram, 10-11 February 2018

Shortwave Radiogram

Shortwave Radiogram

Hello friends,

Last weekend’s reception was generally good except for the Sunday 2030-2100 UTC transmission on 7780 kHz from WRMI in Florida. Lately it has been heard well only in parts of the eastern half of the USA. On the other hand, it’s a good test of decoding from a weak signal.

World Radio Day will be this Tuesday. Try not to get carried away with your celebrations.

Shortwave Radiogram this weekend will mostly be in MFSK32, but we will also try another experiment with Olivia modes. Two weeks ago, we transmitted five Olivia modes, all 2000 Hz wide, but with the number of tones decreasing from 64 to 4. This weekend, the number of tones will be 8, but the bandwidths will be 2000, 1000, and 500 Hz.

The RSID should set your software to the correct mode. If it does not, a 30-second tone will be sent after the RSID to give you some time to change the mode manually. The Olivia 8-2000 mode will require a custom mode change: Op Mode > Olivia > Custom > set bandwidth to 2000 Hz and the tones to 8. The Olivia 8-1000 (1K) and 8-500 modes can be set in the main Olivia window. Or you can create Fldigi macros: <MODEM:OLIVIA:2000:8> <MODEM:OLIVIA:1000:8> <MODEM:OLIVIA:500:8>.

Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 34, in MFSK32 except where noted:

1:35   Program preview

2:54   World Radio Day 2018*

6:15   Pakistani media warned against promoting Valentine’s Day*

10:32 The launch of SpaceX Falcon Heavy*

15:11 Olivia 8-2000: Chicago dinosaur skeleton will move
