This year’s Eifel Radio Days have been in the pipeline for quite a while, but the frequencies have been published only on short notice. The annual project will be on the air starting on Friday, November 8, from 14:00 to 17:00 UTC on 3985 kHz, from 16:30 to 20:00 UTC on 6005 KHz, and from 20:00 to 23:00 UTC again on 3985 kHz.
On Saturday, November 9, 06:00 to 17:00 UTC will see them on 3985 kHz, 16:30 to 20:00 UTC on 6005 kHz, and 20:00 24:00 UTC on 3985 kHz.
On Sunday, November 10, 6005 kHz will be in use from 05:00 to 17:00 UTC, and 3985 kHz from 07:00 to 17:00 UTC.
If the frequencies look familiar to you, it’s probably no coincidence as these are the Kall-Krekel transmitters which routinely air programs by Radio Slovakia and SRF Swiss Radio on these wavelengths.
The programs are in German and probably best heard on the European continent (plus some neighboring regions), and they have a real radio feeling, with news bulletins on the hour from 09:00 to 17:00 UTC, and carefully prepared programs, many of them centered on radio topics, and with a good share of music, especially by shortwave standards.
The studios are located in a bunker that had been built during the cold war, to shelter the Northrhine-Westphalian government’s civil defense work in case of a “hot” war. The equipment is from that era, including an old radio studio that had been part of the war shelter, too. We’ll get to hear music from old band machines.
