Hello friends,
This email (or web post) is late because of a thunderstorm on June 19. We lost electricity, which was not restored until today at 1415 UTC. Fortunately, program 406 was completed and uploaded before the storm hit. All my antennas survived. The only damage here was several small branches down in the front yard. For some reason, the electric grid in our neighborhood is unusually fragile — maybe because of all the trees — and we seem to be at the end of the priority for repairs. Thanks to Al Holt for updating the Bluesky and Twitter while I was off the grid.
Last week, during broadcasts of The Mighty KBC (updated schedule here), we were provided time to transmit 30 seconds of Olivia 64-2000. This is a slow but very robust mode that can achieve successful text decodes in reception conditions where voice broadcasts are incomprehensible. Some results on shortwave can be heard and seen here. (You can decode from the audio files.) And results from KBC’s 100-watt medium wave transmitter in the Netherlands are here.
On The Mighty KBC, Peter John has a segment that often includes SSTV images and digital modes. This is during the second half hour of the Eric van Willegen hours. Peter is occasionally not available, so during such weeks the 30 seconds of Olivia 64-2000 is transmitted. It happens that Peter is not available this week, so listen for, and decode, Olivia 64-2000 UTC Sunday at 0154 UTC on 5950 and 891 kHz, Sunday 1254 UTC on 15770 kHz, and Tuesday at 2354 UTC on 5950 kHz. Poor reception is welcomed. It’s probably best to manually set Fldigi to Olivia-64 2000, and make sure the squelch (SQL) is off.
A video of last week’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 405) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Wednesday 1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 406, 19-25 June 2025, in MFSK modes as noted:
