Hello friends,
My new Yaesu FT-991A transceiver has been back to Yaesu twice for warranty repair. It is functioning normally now, knock on wood. When I purchased it, I also bought the accompanying FP-1030A linear power supply. It’s big and heavy — and loud, with the fan noise.
To give my ears a break, I placed my old Yaesu FT-897D transceiver beneath the FT-991, and am now using its attached FP-30 power supply (switching) to power the FT-991A.
As for the FT-897D, it is powered by my new 12v, 35AH deep cycle battery, connected to a maintenance charger. I use the FT-897D mainly to monitor the local VHF-UHF repeaters, on which there is not a lot of activity lately.
Now my shack is silent, except for occasional amateur radio activity, and the MFSK tones for Shortwave Radiogram.
Following up on my column last week about the state of US international broadcasting. federal judge Royce Lamberth ruled that self-described acting CEO of the US Agency for Global Media could not fire Voice of America director Mike Abramowitz. And the Trump Administration has cut another 500+ jobs from VOA and USAGM. The only jobs left are reduced VOA efforts in Chinese, Persian, Dari and Pashto, plus Radio MartĆ and its martinoticias.com.
A video of last week’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 415) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Wednesday 1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 416, 4-10 September 2025, in MFSK modes as noted :
1:41 MFSK32: Program preview
2:51 MFSK32: Mining waste contains useful minerals
6:56 MFSK64: Audio tool detects species underwater
9:32 MFSK64: This week’s images
28:25 MFSK32: Closing announcements
