Shortwave Radiogram
Hello friends,
A new version of Fldigi, 4.0.17, is available. Please download it before next weekend (29 June-July 2), because we will be experimenting with the improved 8PSK modem, specifically 8PSK125F and 250F.
Last weekend’s first anniversary weekend of Shortwave Radiogram got off to a difficult start. The first broadcast Friday at 2030 UTC was not transmitted on either of its frequencies due to heavy thunderstorms near the WRMI site in Florida.
The second broadcast, Saturday at 1600 UTC, suffered from a very low audio level that caused decoding errors in some parts of the world. Space Line in Bulgaria tells me that they reduce to audio level of Shortwave Radiogram to 70% to prevent our 100% duty cycle modes from causing problems for the transmitter.
A reduction to 70% is OK, but I think last week they reduced the audio level too much. The Space Line transmitter operators are now aware of the problem, so let’s hope for better results this weekend.
The final two shows of the weekend were successful. I was especially pleased by the 100% decode of the Arabic text using a receiver in Qatar, Sunday during the 2330 UTC show, 7780 kHz all the way from WRMI Florida. And Monday at 0800 UTC, all of the text, including the 240 wpm MFSK64, was decoded at the Tecsun Radios Australia KiwiSDR, on 7730 kHz from WRMI.
Videos of last weekend’s Shortwave Radiogram Saturday at 1600 UTC are provided by Sefi in Israel (includes a few minutes of the preceding KBC, so you can hear the reduction in audio level on 9400 kHz), Ralf in Germany, pe7b in Belgium (excerpt), and at 2330 UTC on Sunday by Scott in Ontario. Also available is the audio archive maintained by Mark in the UK, as well as analysis prepared by Roger in Germany.
This weekend some of you in North America will be participating in the amateur radio Field Day. All four of the Shortwave Radiogram broadcasts are either before or after the Field Day hours (Saturday 1800-Sunday 2059 UTC), so I hope you can tune it.
The Mighty KBC broadcast to North America Sunday at 0000-0200 UTC on 9925 kHz from Germany is during the Field Day operating period. It will include an MFSK64 greeting (text and an image) to Field Day participants at about 0130 UTC.
This weekend’s show will be busy, with ten images. Modes are MFSK32 and 64.
Here is the lineup for Shortwave Radiogram, program 53, 22-25 June 2018, in MFSK modes as noted:
1:34 MFSK32: Program preview
2:44 China takes over some old Radio Australia SW frequencies*
8:22 MFSK64: High-frequency trading via high-frequency radio*
