Hello friends,
As I type this, the wind is picking up, and thunder is in the distance. I hope I can complete this email before any power failure.
One of the text stories in this week’s Shortwave Radiogram (463) is about the history of Radio Prague International — known as Radio Prague during most of it history. I started listening to Radio Prague in the 1960s, noticing its softening tone in the lead-up to the Prague Spring, then its return to communist orthodoxy — with uninteresting programming — after 1968. Then a softening again in the 1980s, culminating in the Velvet Revolution of 1989.
We will transmit Radio Prague International’s own story about its history. It mentions Inter-Program, for holidaymakers visiting Czechoslovakia. Not mentioned is that Inter-Program was on medium wave as well as shortwave. It was probably the medium wave that helped Inter-Program develop an audience among Czechoslovakian citizens, as well as among listeners in nearby Germany. In addition to German, there were also newscasts in English and French. As stated in the story, it was the Western music that drew Czechoslovakian audiences to Inter-Program.
A video of last week’s Shortwave Radiogram (program 424) is provided by Scott in Ontario (Wednesday 1330 UTC). The audio archive is maintained by Mark in the UK. Analysis is provided by Roger in Germany. Also, an IQ audio file and other resources from H0B0_Radio in Washington state. And John Rabold’s image archive.
